چکیده

Conventional crosswell surveys are expensive because a source must be placed downhole, which means that the hole must be prepped and placed off-line for a number of days. We suggest an interesting but unproven alternative: place a source on the surface, drop a simple obstruction-like device downhole that scatters tube wave arrivals from the surface source, and use the scattered tube waves energy as a seismic source in that borehole. We test this idea by computing the tube wave responses from a synthetic crosswell data set and use these tube-wave responses to construct a well-resolved velocity image between the wells. The tube wave responses are also computed from field data recorded with a conventional crosswell survey. The processing method is based on stacking of coherent seismic energy that emanates from the location of tube wave scattering. Results show that the arrival time of both the transmitted arrivals and reflection events in the tube wave responses agree well with those in the real common shot gathers. However, there are fewer reflection events in the tube wave responses than in the conventional shot gathers and their bandwidth is not as wide. Nevertheless, this result suggests the possibility that more economical crosswell seismic surveys can be performed using surface seismic sources and tube wave scatterers in the source well. The remaining question is whether or not the tube wave scatterer is strong enough to generate reflections with a sufficiently high signal-to-noise ratio.

Extraction of Reflections from Tube Waves

Meng (1997) used the McConnell crosswell data to show that transmitted arrival traveltimes can be extracted from common receiver gathers (CRG) where the effective source is a tube wave generator. In this report I use the McElroy crosswell data to show that reflection events can be extracted from CRG’s where the effective source is a tube wave generator. This result opens the possibility that mo...

Nonreflection seismic and inversion of surface and guided waves

S imaging need not be synonymous with or rely on the presence of reflectors in the Earth. Much can be gleaned from the nonreflected wavefield. For example, direct waves map out smooth velocity variations in crosswell seismic tomography, wide-angle refracted waves play a crucial role in full waveform inversion (Hole et al., 2005), and surface waves provide unmatched sensitivity to near-surface s...

Tube-wave Effects in Cross-Well Seismic Data at Stratton Field

The analysis of crosswell seismic data for a gas reservoir in Texas revealed two newly detected seismic wave effects, recorded 2000 feet above the reservoir. The first is that the dominant late phases on the records are the tube waves generated in the source well and later converted into laterally propagating waves through the reservoir in gas/water saturated layers, which convert back to tubew...

The Value of Borehole -to-surface Information in Near-surface Crosswell Seismic Tomography

Detailed information about the spatial distribution of subsurface properties is important in many fields. One method that can image the seismic velocity structure of the shallow subsurface is crosswell seismic tomography. By including rays traveling from the boreholes to the surface, the angular coverage of crosswell tomograms can be significantly improved. We investigated the effects of these ...

Slime Mold Team 1 Project Report

The Physarum Polycephalum, or true slime mold, is a large multi-nuclear cell which uses a network of tube-like structures called pseudopodia to connect food sources and ensure its survival. Much study has been done on the behavior and formation of the pseudopodia, with a special focus on the tendency to choose an efficient path between the food sources [1, 2, 4, 6, 9, 10, 12, 13]. When food is ...
